Terms explained
- PLC
- Programmable logic controller: an industrial computer that reads the signals of field instruments and controls equipment according to its program.
- SCADA
- Supervisory control and data acquisition: software that collects data from a plant and lets operators monitor and control it from a control room.
- DCS / ESD
- A DCS (distributed control system) runs the process; an ESD (emergency shutdown) system takes the plant to a safe state when it detects a hazardous condition.
- Flow computer
- A device that calculates the flow of a gas or liquid — volume, mass and energy — from the signals of the meter and its instruments.
- Terminal automation
- Systems that control and record the loading of products into trucks, ships or trains, and their transfer through pipelines.
